How to limit ad tracking on Android

Mobile phone tracking will always be a contentious issue. Even though some individuals dislike receiving relevant and customised adverts, businesses have used ad monitoring for years to better understand customer behaviour.

The benefits of ad tracking for users may be attributed to a number of factors. However, it isn’t always a wise move. Regarding tailored advertisements, Google and Facebook have been exceedingly outspoken. Their major defence has been that it may benefit small firms.

App Tracking Transparency (ATT), a feature offered by Apple, enables users to choose which apps can monitor their internet activity. If you don’t want any tailored adverts or applications to utilise your data, it may be completely turned off. The Android operating system from Google, however, is another story.

How to manage Android location settings

On Android smartphones, there isn’t a clear way to turn off ad tracking, but there are a few tricks you may employ to trick the operating system. Changing your location settings is the simplest approach to avoid localised advertisements for products you don’t want.

Tap Settings and go to Google to do this. Tap Manage Google Account from there. Tap Data & personalisation at the top. You may choose whether or not Google receives a report of your location using the choices offered. Turn off the switch next to Use Location History. This prevents all of your Google devices and accounts from tracking your whereabouts. Additionally, you have the choice to restrict monitoring to only those Android devices.

Opt out of ad personalization

Opting out of targeted adverts is the most effective action you can take. Google recently disclosed that if you opt out, it would be more difficult for Android applications to monitor you, similar to what Apple did previously tracking.

Tap Settings and go to Google to do this. Toggle the Opt out of Ads Personalization switch by tapping the Ads option. Then, instead of your Advertising ID, advertisers will see a series of zeros.

Change Android Activity Controls

Users of Android and Google may modify how the operating system collects data. On your Activity Controls page, you may modify your Android device’s location settings and ad personalisation if you haven’t already.

Nearly everything that Google collects, distributes, or generates about you may be accessed (and erased) from this page, which serves as a catch-all for Google settings. Visit myactivity.google.com/activitycontrols to modify your preferences.

You may modify your Google account’s settings under the Location History section. Additionally, you may remove old data and see any recorded data.

The ad customisation option is located underneath the YouTube History panel. You won’t see any more personalised ads if you flip the switch to the off position.
